IIT Gandhinagar’s New Centre of Excellence to Strengthen Research and Innovation
Launch of Research Clusters, Central Instrumentation Facility and Centre of Excellence on AI and Innovation to boost research, innovation and industry-academia collaboration

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is set to launch a series of major research and innovation initiatives on June 11. These initiatives aim to strengthen scientific infrastructure, promote collaboration across disciplines and accelerate innovation in emerging technologies. The move is expected to help the institute reach new heights in research and technological development.

As part of these initiatives, IIT Gandhinagar will establish Research Clusters, a Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF), and a Centre of Excellence on AI and Innovation. These facilities will provide researchers, faculty members and students with access to advanced resources and collaborative platforms, enabling them to address complex scientific, technological and societal challenges more effectively.

IIT Gandhinagar believes that many of today’s major challenges cannot be solved through a single-disciplinary approach. To encourage interdisciplinary research, the institute has developed the concept of Research Clusters, where experts from different fields will work together on issues of national and global importance.

Research Clusters to Accelerate Innovation and Collaborative Research

Through the Research Clusters, experts from fields such as science, engineering, healthcare, environmental studies, data science, social sciences and other disciplines will be brought together on a common platform. This will encourage the exchange of ideas among researchers and promote new discoveries and innovations. The initiative will also provide students with opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary research projects.

Experts believe that future challenges can only be addressed through a multidisciplinary approach. In this context, the Research Clusters will not only improve the quality of research but also help develop solutions that meet the real needs of industry and society.

Alongside this, the newly established Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) will serve as a shared platform for researchers. It will provide access to advanced scientific instruments, modern laboratory facilities and technical expertise, enabling researchers from different departments to conduct high-quality research.

Central Instrumentation Facility to Offer Advanced Research Infrastructure

In many research institutions, limited access to expensive scientific equipment often affects the pace and quality of research. The new CIF is expected to address this challenge by providing researchers with access to world-class instruments and facilities. This is likely to significantly improve the quality, accuracy and efficiency of research activities.

The facility will also prove highly beneficial for students and young researchers, as it will give them hands-on exposure to advanced technologies and research methodologies. This experience is expected to enhance their research capabilities and technical expertise.

Another major highlight of the initiative is the establishment of the Centre of Excellence on AI and Innovation. The centre will serve as a leading hub for advanced research, innovation and technology development in Artificial Intelligence and related emerging technologies.

Cutting-Edge Research in AI and Emerging Technologies

The Centre of Excellence aims to promote research in AI-based solutions, machine learning, data analytics, automation and other emerging technologies. It will collaborate with industry partners, startups and government agencies to develop solutions that can drive positive change across sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, manufacturing and public services.

The institute believes that Artificial Intelligence will play a critical role in India’s economic and technological progress in the coming years. The centre is therefore expected to connect students and researchers with world-class research opportunities and innovation ecosystems.

Through these initiatives, IIT Gandhinagar is taking significant steps towards building a robust research ecosystem. This ecosystem will support innovation, knowledge creation and technology-driven solutions aligned with national priorities and the vision of Viksit Bharat.

Nearly 70 MoUs to Strengthen Industry-Academia Collaboration

One of the major highlights of the event will be the signing of nearly 70 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between IIT Gandhinagar and leading companies, academic institutions, research organizations and government agencies from India and abroad.

These partnerships are expected to strengthen collaboration between industry and academia while creating new opportunities for joint research, innovation, technology transfer, student internships, faculty exchange programs, skill development and startup incubation.

According to experts, such collaborations not only make research more practical and application-oriented but also help students understand the real-world needs of industry. This is expected to boost employment opportunities, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Initiatives to be Inaugurated in Presence of Dr. Jitendra Singh

All these initiatives will be inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences. Faculty members, researchers, students, industry leaders, policymakers and experts from various sectors are also expected to attend the event.

These initiatives by IIT Gandhinagar will not only strengthen the institute’s research capabilities but also contribute significantly to India’s journey toward becoming a global hub for knowledge and innovation. By providing world-class facilities to students and researchers, the institute aims to accelerate science, technology and innovation-driven development across the country.
