IIT Ropar and RGNAU to Launch PG Diploma in Drone Technology
One-year joint programme in UAV Operations and Drone Technology to provide students with technical knowledge and hands-on training.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar and the Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University (RGNAU) have entered into a significant partnership aimed at developing skilled professionals in the field of drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology.

The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly offer a one-year Post Graduate Diploma (PG Diploma) programme. The programme will focus on UAV Operations and Drone Technology and provide students with an opportunity to gain expertise in this rapidly growing field.

The MoU was signed by Professor Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar and Professor Bhrigu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of RGNAU, in the presence of faculty members and officials from both institutions. The collaboration is being viewed as an important step toward developing a skilled workforce for India’s expanding drone and aviation sector.

Under the joint programme, students will pursue their first semester at Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University and complete their second semester at IIT Ropar. This structure will enable students to benefit from the expertise, academic strengths and resources of both institutions.

Hands-On Experience in Drone Technology

The curriculum has been carefully designed to provide students with both a strong theoretical foundation and practical training in drone and UAV technologies. The programme will cover topics such as drone design, operations, safety standards, aerial data collection, surveillance systems and various industrial applications.

Students will gain exposure to modern drone technologies and their real-world applications, helping them develop industry-relevant skills. With growing demand for drone technology in sectors such as agriculture, defence, disaster management, logistics, surveying and smart infrastructure, the programme is expected to open up new career opportunities for students.

Boost to Research and Skill Development in Drone Technology

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Rajeev Ahuja said that the collaboration would provide new momentum to research, innovation and skill development in the field of drone technology. He added that both institutions would work together to promote technical education, capacity building and research activities, thereby strengthening India’s drone ecosystem.

The partnership also reflects the commitment of IIT Ropar and RGNAU to advancing quality education and research in emerging technologies. Experts believe that the programme will play a crucial role in preparing a new generation of industry-ready professionals capable of meeting the growing demands of India’s rapidly expanding drone and aviation industry.
