IIT Madras Launches UDYOG Programme to Train Graduates for Industry Requirements
The initiative aims to prepare young graduates for the biotechnology and biomanufacturing sectors. The programme includes online courses, laboratory training, pilot-scale exposure and opportunities for industry internships.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the UDYOG programme to equip young graduates with industry-relevant skills for the biotechnology and biomanufacturing sectors. The initiative is an industry-oriented finishing school designed to prepare graduates for employment through practical training and professional skill development.

UDYOG stands for Upskilling and Development for Young Graduates. The programme aims to bridge the gap between academic education and industry requirements through a structured training pathway. Instead of limiting students to theoretical knowledge, it will provide them with opportunities to work in laboratories and understand industrial processes.

Focus on Online Courses and Laboratory Training

The UDYOG programme combines online courses, intensive laboratory training, pilot-scale exposure and opportunities for industry internships. This training approach aims to prepare students for practical responsibilities and professional roles in biotechnology and biomanufacturing.

Biomanufacturing involves the use of biological systems, cells and other biological processes to produce various products. Along with research, the sector requires an understanding of laboratory techniques, manufacturing processes and quality standards. Industry-oriented training can therefore help students apply their academic knowledge in real-world working environments.

Opportunities for B.Tech, M.Tech and M.Sc Students

Launched through SynBioME, an initiative of the IIT Madras–TICEL Biofoundry, the programme is designed for students pursuing biotechnology and allied disciplines. Students in the pre-final and final years of B.Tech, M.Tech and M.Sc programmes at colleges and institutes across India are among the intended participants.

The first batch of the programme is scheduled to commence on January 18, 2027. The deadline for early-bird registration is December 15, 2026. Interested students should verify the eligibility criteria, fee structure and application process through the institute’s official announcement before applying.

IIT Madras Emphasises Academia–Industry Collaboration

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras
, inaugurated the programme on Wednesday. On the occasion, he highlighted the growing need for collaboration between academia and industry.

“AI also means Academia-Industry. It is becoming an absolute necessity that every discipline of Science and Engineering must look at this AI with care to make themselves relevant to the modern world. UDYOG is yet another effort taken by IIT Madras in this direction,” Kamakoti said.

The programme reflects the growing emphasis on practical training and skill development aligned with industry requirements in higher education. In rapidly evolving fields such as biotechnology, providing students with hands-on experience during their studies can play an important role in preparing them for future careers.
