The institute aims to provide AI-based training to one million teachers by 2027, with the goal of making classroom education more modern, easy and effective. The programme is specifically designed to prepare teachers for the use of AI in everyday teaching and classroom activities.
This initiative has been launched by the Bodhan AI Centre established at IIT Madras, which works on the use of AI technology in the field of education. Under this programme, teachers will be trained in AI-based lesson planning worksheet generation, multilingual content delivery and evaluation. This is expected to reduce teachers’ workload and help improve the quality of education.
AI Will Transform the Teaching Process
According to IIT Madras, the programme focuses on integrating AI into schools in a structured manner. Its aim is to implement AI-based teaching models on a large scale across central, state and government-supported schools. With the help of AI, teachers will be able to create better teaching materials in less time and provide more personalised learning experiences based on students’ individual needs.
The institute stated that the use of AI technology will improve the quality and consistency of teaching materials. At the same time, students will receive a better learning experience according to their abilities and learning requirements. This could help make the education system more effective and modern.
Teachers Will Receive AI Training
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan praised the initiative and said that introducing AI into classrooms is not just about bringing in new technology, but about empowering teachers to become architects of a future-ready India. He added that this initiative could play an important role in giving a new direction to the country’s education system.
V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said that India’s greatest strength lies in its diversity and vast education system. Therefore, technology must also evolve at the same scale. He stated that as AI continues to reshape education, building AI literacy among teachers has become extremely important.
AI Will Become a Teaching Assistant
Mitesh Khapra, Principal Investigator at Bodhan AI, said that the objective of this programme is to make AI a trusted “co-pilot” for every teacher. According to him, the initiative will go beyond awareness and prepare teachers for the practical use of AI in daily teaching. This will help teachers save time, improve teaching quality and engage more effectively with students.
The programme will be implemented in phases. Pre-pilot and pilot projects will begin in the coming months, followed by the launch of the first public batch on September 5, Teachers’ Day. IIT Madras aims to connect one million teachers across the country with this AI training programme by 2027.
Overall, this initiative could become a major step toward building an AI-enabled classroom ecosystem in India. It will not only encourage limited AI usage in individual schools but could also bring AI-driven transformation across the entire education system.
According to education experts, the AI-based education market in India is growing rapidly. Various reports suggest that AI technology could completely transform teaching methods in schools and higher education institutions in the coming years. Currently, many schools across the country are working toward adopting digital learning, smart classrooms, and AI-based tools. In this context, IIT Madras’ initiative will help prepare teachers for new technologies.
This will not only improve teachers’ efficiency but also provide students with a more interactive, personalised and modern learning experience. Experts believe that AI-based training can make India’s education system more technology-driven and globally competitive in the future.
