Kalyani Powertrain, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharat Forge, has partnered with APSRTC to convert a diesel-powered bus into a fully electric “Super Luxury” AC coach.
According to reports, the retrofitted bus is capable of delivering a driving range of over 230 km on a single charge and will now be deployed for on-road and commercial trials across APSRTC routes. The original bus was commissioned in 2017 in the Tirupati region and has now been fully upgraded with an electric powertrain, battery system, and a new air-conditioned body after removing the diesel engine and related components.
The vehicle is equipped with a 240 kW fast-charging system, enabling a charging time of around two hours from 20% to full capacity.
This initiative is part of Kalyani Powertrain’s broader strategy focused on commercial vehicle electrification and retrofit solutions, as the company continues to expand its EV technology capabilities for buses and heavy vehicles.
For APSRTC, the project represents an important step toward evaluating retrofit-based electrification as an alternative to full fleet replacement for sustainable public transport adoption.
