NCERT Reshapes School Education Framework, Physical Education Now Mandatory
National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a major change in school education by making Physical Education a compulsory subject for students from Classes 3 to 10.

The aim of this decision is to ensure that students are not limited only to academics, but also focus on their physical, mental and social development. Under the new system, sports, fitness, yoga and health education have been made an important part of the school curriculum.

New Book ‘Khel Praveen’ Launched for Class 9

As part of this change, NCERT has introduced a new textbook titled ‘Khel Praveen’ for Class 9 students. The book has been designed to create awareness among students about sports and fitness while also helping them understand overall health in a better way. Moving beyond traditional physical exercises and rote learning, the book will provide modern knowledge about fitness, sports science, yoga and mental health.

Focus on Health and Lifestyle Along with Sports

Through ‘Khel Praveen’, physical education will no longer remain limited to playground activities. The book includes important topics such as the functioning of the human body, history of sports, moral values, healthy lifestyle, setting fitness goals and career opportunities in sports. Its aim is not just to teach students how to play games, but also to encourage them to adopt a fit and disciplined lifestyle

The new system will also introduce a different method of evaluation for students. Out of the total assessment, 40 percent weightage will be given to theory, 40 percent to practicals and 20 percent to project work. Under project work, students will be asked to design inclusive games, conduct fitness surveys and study local sports traditions. This will help them apply classroom learning in practical situations.

Traditional Indian Sports to Receive Greater Importance

One of the key highlights of the new book is the inclusion of India’s traditional sports heritage. Students will be introduced to indigenous sports and traditional art forms such as Mallakhamb, Thang-Ta, Gatka and Kalaripayattu. This will not only improve physical fitness among children but also increase awareness about Indian culture and traditions.

According to NCERT, ‘Khel Praveen’ is not limited only to physical fitness, but will also help strengthen students’ mental health, self-confidence, teamwork and social skills. Sports-based education will also focus on developing leadership qualities, discipline and positive thinking among children.

A Major Step Towards Modernising the Education System

Experts believe that this initiative is an important step towards bringing positive and modern changes in school education. By making sports an integral part of academics, the initiative aims to promote the holistic development of students. Under the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this move could play a significant role in making children healthier, more active and self-confident.
