Amid a slower-than-expected transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in India, Skoda Auto India is moving towards a multi-fuel powertrain strategy to stay aligned with market realities. The company plans to offer a mix of petrol, CNG, EV, hybrid, and potentially diesel options to cater to diverse customer needs.
Brand Director Ashish Gupta stated that relying on a single technology is not practical in a dynamic market like India. While electrification remains the long-term direction, he acknowledged a clear gap between regulatory push and actual consumer demand.
To address this, Skoda will continue focusing on petrol engines while exploring CNG as a more accessible alternative. The company also plans a phased rollout of EVs, ensuring that product strategy remains aligned with real market demand.
Gupta highlighted that India’s diverse automotive landscape requires flexible solutions, allowing customers to choose from multiple powertrain options. He emphasized that adaptability is crucial, especially when demand patterns are still evolving.
The company also flagged global geopolitical uncertainties as a key factor impacting the auto industry. Fluctuations in crude oil prices and economic instability can influence consumer sentiment, often leading buyers to delay vehicle purchases.
Although Skoda’s production remains stable for now, prolonged global tensions could pose future risks. In this scenario, the company believes that a flexible, multi-fuel approach will be essential to navigate uncertainties and sustain growth in the Indian market.
