UGC Approves Birkbeck University to Open a Campus in Bengaluru
The UGC has approved the UK-based Birkbeck, University of London to establish its campus in Bengaluru. This decision is considered a significant step towards strengthening the internationalisation of higher education in India.

Affordable International Education for Indian Students

With the establishment of this campus in Bengaluru, Indian students will get the opportunity to earn a degree from the University of London at nearly 60% lower cost. Notably, the campus will offer the same academic quality, research-based learning and industry-integrated courses as those taught in the UK.

This will reduce the need for students to go abroad and enable them to gain international exposure at a lower cost.

The new regulations introduced by the UGC in November 2023 have made it easier for foreign universities to set up campuses in India. Following this, several international institutions have shown interest in expanding and investing in the country. According to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, more than 19 foreign universities are preparing to establish campuses in India, while 12 institutions have already been issued Letters of Intent (LOI) by 2025. This indicates that India is rapidly emerging as an attractive global education destination.

A New Boost to the Education Sector

This initiative also supports India’s goal of increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2030. The availability of high-quality international education within the country will help more students access higher education, especially those who are unable to study abroad due to financial or other constraints.

UGC Chairman Vineet Joshi stated that this approval will open new doors of global education for Indian students. He added that students will now be able to access world-class education at a much lower cost compared to studying abroad, ensuring greater equity and opportunity.

India Moving Towards Becoming a Global Education Hub

UGC believes that such decisions will help position India as a Global Education Hub. This initiative also reflects the growing collaboration between India and the United Kingdom in the fields of education and research.

Vice Chancellor of Birkbeck, Sally Wheeler, said that opening a campus in India reflects their commitment to making high-quality education more accessible to Indian students.

Overall, the establishment of Birkbeck’s campus in Bengaluru is expected to be a major development in India’s education sector, providing students with access to affordable, high-quality and globally recognised education within the country.
