Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh emerged as the leading state markets across major automobile segments in the first quarter of FY2026-27, according to regional sales data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Both states recorded strong sales across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
India total passenger vehicle sales stood at 12.74 lakh units in Q1 FY27. The Western region led with 3.90 lakh units. Maharashtra recorded the highest state-level passenger vehicle sales at 1.47 lakh units, accounting for an 11.6% market share. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh at 10.6%, Gujarat at 7.8%, Karnataka at 7.7% and Tamil Nadu at 7.6%.
Two-wheeler sales across the country reached 56.29 lakh units during the quarter, with the Western region accounting for 16.61 lakh units. Uttar Pradesh topped the state rankings with 8.82 lakh units and a 15.7% market share. Maharashtra followed with 10.0%, Tamil Nadu with 8.5%, while Karnataka and Bihar each accounted for 6.6%.
In the commercial vehicle segment, industry volumes stood at 2.65 lakh units, with the Western region contributing 0.91 lakh units. Maharashtra recorded the highest state-level sales at 0.36 lakh units, representing a 13.8% market share. Tamil Nadu followed at 9.4%, Karnataka at 8.3%, Gujarat at 8.2% and Uttar Pradesh at 8.0%.
Three-wheeler sales totalled 2.14 lakh units during the quarter, with the Southern region leading zonal sales at 0.71 lakh units. Uttar Pradesh topped the state rankings with 0.26 lakh units and a 12.0% market share. Gujarat followed at 9.6%, Karnataka at 9.0%, Bihar at 7.3% and Assam at 7.1%.
The SIAM data highlights the importance of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in India automobile market. While Maharashtra maintained a strong position in passenger and commercial vehicle sales, Uttar Pradesh led demand for two- and three-wheelers during Q1 FY27.
