5 Things to Know About UK’s First AI Minister, Kanishka Narayan

The UK has appointed its first-ever AI Minister, and it’s the Indian-origin MP, Kanishka Narayan. Andy Burnham, who swore in as the UK Prime Minister, has begun forming his new cabinet, which also introduces the role. Born in Muzaffarpur  a city in Bihar, the 37-year-old Narayan moved to the UK when he was 12.

“…AI is likely the most significant technology in human history. Its impact will dwarf other things…,” Narayan said in a post.

“The best case for it is compelling beyond our dreams: a reindustrialized Britain, stronger national security, public services transformed for the better. The risks, too, are real: it is right that the British public shares those worries, for jobs, for the pace of change. The central fact is that it is happening. Nations have a narrow window to decide whether they shape AI or get shaped by it. Britain is in that window right now,” he added.

Narayan’s appointment shows the increasing importance of AI globally to shape the tech and redefine the industries, economies and everyday life.

Role and Responsibilities 

As the AI Minister, Narayan is responsible for overseeing the regulation of AI technologies, ensuring their safe and ethical use and promoting the development of AI infrastructure in the UK. His role further includes:

Regulating AI Technologies: Narayan will oversee the regulation of AI technologies to ensure they are safe and ethical for public use.

Promoting AI Infrastructure: He will work on the development of AI infrastructure to support the growth of the AI sector in the UK.

AI Regulation: Narayan will be responsible for ensuring that AI technologies are developed and used responsibly with a focus on safety and ethical considerations.

UK-India Technology Cooperation: He will also oversee UK-India technology cooperation, which is expected to strengthen the UK’s position in the global AI race.

His work will be crucial in guiding the UK’s AI strategy and ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of technological innovation.

Career

Narayan started his career in the UK as a civil servant at the Environment Department under David Cameron and Liz Truss, respectively. After his career in civil service, Narayana stepped into the private sector wherein he worked in finance, investment and technology sector.

Kanishka also entered into active politics as a member of the Labour Party and also became the parliamentary candidate for Vale of Glamogan.

In 2024’s UK general elections he defeated the sitting MP to become the first Labour Member of Parliament. In September 2025, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Under- Secretary of State for AI and Online Safety. On July 20, 2026 Narayan became the first AI minister of the UK.

Education and Qualifications

Kanishka did his schooling from Cathays High School. Cardiff, Wales and with scholarship he went for further studies to Eton College, UK. After completing his studies at Eton, he went to University of Oxford to pursue Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE).

He continued his education at Stanford University in the United States, where he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA). This advanced qualification expanded his expertise in business strategy, leadership, innovation, finance and technology.

His qualifications combined with his practical experience in government and the private sector, equipped him with the skills needed to serve in senior public office and contribute to the UK’s policies on AI, economic growth and digital innovation.

Accomplishments

In July 2024, he became the first ethnic minority MP from Wales, breaking barriers and setting an example for future generations. His election was widely covered in the media with the BBC calling it “one of the most significant developments since 1929.”

Narayan’s Vision

In a post shared after 48 hours after taking charge as the AI Minister, Narayan outlined his priorities. He further mentioned the points discussed in his meeting with leaders from major AI and technology companies i.e., use of AI to boost manufacturing, creating jobs and strengthening the AI industry in the country.

He also focused on AI benefits to the local and workers community highlighting discussions with trade unions and regional tech groups. Narayan also noted the Prime Minister’s strong support for AI, saying he is focused on moving quickly and ensuring Britain plays a leading role in shaping the future of AI.

“Nations have a narrow window to decide whether they shape AI or get shaped by it. Britain is in that window right now. While that window is still open, I will act with pace, I will act with ambition and I will focus relentlessly on securing British influence in shaping AI,” Narayan said.
