Energy In Motion Limited (EIM) has signed an agreement with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to establish and operate fast-charging and battery-swapping infrastructure for electric heavy commercial vehicles (e-HCVs) at select HPCL retail outlets across India.
HPCL operates more than 25,000 retail outlets nationwide, including locations along major highways and expressways. Under the partnership, EIM will roll out charging and battery-swapping facilities in phases. The first phase will focus on key freight corridors, including Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Jaipur, and Chennai–Bengaluru, where swap-and-charge hubs will be developed over the next 18 to 24 months. The network will subsequently expand to other parts of the country.
The stations will offer both fast-charging and battery-swapping services for electric commercial vehicles. They will be integrated with EIM's digital platform, enabling real-time station availability, digital payments, and remote monitoring.
As part of the agreement, EIM will own and manage the battery inventory and swap-and-charge hardware, while HPCL will provide space, power, utilities, and other common infrastructure at its retail outlets.
The battery-swapping system will allow compatible electric commercial vehicles to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in just seven minutes, significantly reducing vehicle downtime and improving operational efficiency.
Commenting on the partnership, Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director of EIM, said that the success of charging infrastructure depends on its reliability. He noted that by leveraging HPCL's nationwide network of fuel stations, EIM will establish charging and battery-swapping facilities at locations where truck drivers already stop, ensuring access to power, space, safety systems, and essential amenities. He added that the collaboration will help build a dependable swap-and-charge network across India's busiest freight corridors.
EIM is developing a nationwide ecosystem for electric heavy commercial vehicles, including megawatt-scale charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. The company launched its first electric heavy-duty vehicle, the 55-ton Ashwa e-tractor, on August 1, 2025.
Currently, EIM operates six heavy-duty battery-swapping stations in the Delhi-NCR region and the JNPA port area, with a combined capacity of 840 battery swaps per day. The company aims to have 40 heavy commercial vehicle swap-cum-charging stations operational across India by the end of March 2027.
