NCERT Apologises Over Judiciary-Related Controversy, Withdraws Class 8 Textbook
NCERT has issued a public apology following a controversy surrounding a Class 8 Social Science textbook and has decided to withdraw the book from the market and schools.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Class 8 book titled ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond Part II’ had drawn objections over a chapter related to the judiciary. Following the concerns, the council has taken action and removed the book from circulation.

Controversy Over Chapter on the Judiciary

According to an official press release issued by NCERT, the book included Chapter IV titled “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society.” Some educationists and other stakeholders raised concerns regarding the content of this chapter.

Taking these concerns seriously, the council decided to withdraw the book. NCERT has also issued an “unconditional and full apology” for the publication of the chapter.

Entire Book Withdrawn From Circulation

According to NCERT’s statement, the Director and members of the council decided after deliberation that the entire book should be removed from distribution and use in schools. As a result, the textbook will no longer be available for teaching or distribution in schools.

However, the council did not specify the exact issues within the chapter that led to the controversy. It stated that corrective measures have been taken immediately.

In its statement, NCERT said: “The council deeply regrets the inconvenience caused by this incident and appreciates the understanding of all stakeholders.”

Discussion Begins in the Education Sector

The concerns raised over the content of the textbook have sparked widespread discussion within the education sector. Experts say that school textbooks must present constitutional institutions such as the judiciary, Parliament and the executive in a balanced and factual manner.

Impact on Schools Across the Country

Education experts point out that NCERT textbooks are widely used in schools across India. These include Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and several state board schools. Therefore, any change or withdrawal of a textbook can significantly affect millions of students and teachers.

What Happens Next?

At present, NCERT has not clarified when the chapter will be revised and republished. Further clarification from the council is awaited regarding updated curriculum plans for the upcoming academic session.

Experts believe that the review process for school textbooks may be strengthened in the future to avoid similar situations and to ensure that students receive balanced and accurate information.
