The authorised biography of Padma Shri Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Chairman of Immersive Technology and Entrepreneurship Labs (ITEL), titled "Roots & Wings: Building India's Deep Tech Ecosystem," was launched at a special event in New Delhi. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal attended the event as the Chief Guest.
The launch brought together prominent leaders from government, industry, academia, entrepreneurship and the startup ecosystem. The book highlights Dr. Jhunjhunwala nearly four decades of contribution to shaping India deep-tech and innovation landscape.
Published by Oxygen Books / New Horizon Media and authored by entrepreneur-writer Saloni Malhotra, the biography traces Dr. Jhunjhunwala's inspiring journey. It covers milestones such as the development of corDECT wireless technology, the establishment of the IIT Madras Research Park, and his mentorship of more than 350 startups, including successful companies such as Ather Energy and Uniphore.
Spread across 336 pages and 14 chapters, the book follows Dr. Jhunjhunwala journey from his childhood in Kolkata during the 1950s to his education at IIT Kanpur and the University of Maine, before returning to India in 1981 to join IIT Madras. It also documents his contributions to the telecom, energy, banking and electric vehicle sectors.
The event featured welcome remarks by Gaurav Bhatnagar, Founder of Mediology Software, followed by addresses from author Saloni Malhotra and publisher Badri Seshadri. Union Minister Piyush Goyal delivered a special address, highlighting Dr. Jhunjhunwala's role in advancing India's technology and innovation ecosystem.
