India automotive component manufacturer Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd. (Sona Comstar) has signed definitive agreements with DENSO Corporation, Japan, to establish two joint ventures (JVs) for the development, design, manufacturing and marketing of advanced electric and hybrid powertrain systems.
The partnership aims to combine DENSO's expertise in electrification, advanced engineering and R&D with Sona Comstar's engineering capabilities, cost-efficient manufacturing and deep understanding of the Indian automotive market. Together, the companies plan to deliver high-performance, reliable and cost-effective powertrain solutions for domestic and global markets.
Two Joint Ventures
The first joint venture will focus on high-voltage liquid-cooled traction inverters, traction motors and generators for electric and hybrid passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and other high-voltage applications. DENSO will hold a 51% stake, while Sona Comstar will own the remaining 49%.
The second joint venture will develop air-cooled traction inverters, traction motors, generators and e-Axles for electric and hybrid two-wheelers and three-wheelers. In this venture, Sona Comstar will hold a 51% stake and management control, while DENSO will own 49%.
The companies said both partners will contribute their intellectual property (IP) and technical know-how to the joint ventures. The transaction remains subject to the required regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Commenting on the partnership, Vivek Vikram Singh, Managing Director and Group CEO of Sona Comstar, said the collaboration marks a significant milestone in the company's journey as a mobility technology provider and will strengthen its capabilities in advanced electric and hybrid powertrain systems.
Tsuneo Maebara, Head of Powertrain Systems Business Group at DENSO Corporation, said India is emerging as a key market for electric mobility, and the partnership will combine the strengths of both companies to deliver advanced electrification solutions while supporting the evolving needs of customers in India and global markets.
