Mitsubishi Electric India has inaugurated a new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant expansion of its manufacturing operations in the country. The facility was virtually inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M K Stalin through a plaque unveiling ceremony, in the presence of the Hon’ble Consul General of Japan, Muneo Takahashi.

The Chennai unit has been developed with an investment of approx INR 2,100 crore and spans over 210,000 square metres. It has an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioners and 650,000 compressor units. The project is expected to generate more than 2,100 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

The new plant represents Mitsubishi Electric India’s second manufacturing facility in the country within two years, following the commissioning of its Factory Automation Systems plant in Pune in 2023.

Chief Minister Thiru M K Stalin said, “Chennai continues to serve as the manufacturing backbone of Tamil Nadu, anchored by a deep and well-established industrial ecosystem. The inauguration of Mitsubishi Electric India’s new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility reflects the state’s growing potential and our commitment to enabling businesses from India and across the world to strengthen manufacturing and grow sustainably in Tamil Nadu.”

The facility is aligned with the Government of India’s Make in India initiative and is expected to reduce dependence on imported components by enabling domestic production of air conditioners and compressors. It is also expected to strengthen the regional supplier ecosystem by encouraging local sourcing and supporting skill development in line with global manufacturing standards.

According to Atsushi Takase, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Electric India, “India is witnessing rapid growth in demand for energy-efficient and high-quality air-conditioning solutions. This facility will support this demand through local manufacturing while enabling faster response to customer needs and stronger quality control.”

The Chennai plant incorporates data-driven and digitally enabled manufacturing processes based on Mitsubishi Electric’s global manufacturing principles and Japanese technology. These processes support real-time monitoring, precision manufacturing, and consistent quality standards.

The facility has also been developed with a focus on responsible manufacturing practices, including efficient resource utilisation, waste reduction and workplace safety. The locally manufactured air conditioners and compressors are designed to meet India’s evolving energy efficiency standards, supporting the country’s environmental and climate objectives amid rising demand for cooling solutions.

With this addition, Tamil Nadu further strengthens its position as a hub for technology-driven manufacturing, supported by industrial infrastructure and policy initiatives.
