Golden Opportunity for College Students: NBA to Launch Biodiversity Internship
The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has launched a new internship program for undergraduate and postgraduate college students. This internship is related to biodiversity conservation and the management of natural resources.

New Internship Initiative for Students

NBA has launched a new internship program for undergraduate and postgraduate college students. This internship is related to biodiversity conservation and the management of natural resources. The duration of the program will be up to three months. The main objective is to provide students with practical and project-based learning alongside theoretical knowledge, enabling them to directly engage with NBA’s work.

Focus on Empowering Youth

The initiative aims to strengthen the skills of young people. It will help raise awareness about environmental conservation among students and improve their future employment opportunities. Additionally, the program plans to prepare participants as ‘Biodiversity Ambassadors’ so they can spread awareness within society.

One-Year BSIP Program Also Continues

The NBA also runs a one-year Biodiversity Conservation Internship Program (BSIP), which can be extended up to two years if required. In the current year, under its sixth phase, 24 interns have been selected. These interns have been placed with various State Biodiversity Boards (SBBs) and Union Territory Biodiversity Councils (UTBCs) across the country.

Opportunity for Field Study and Real Experience

During this one-year program, interns not only perform office-related tasks but also gain field experience. They participate in meetings, organize programs, and understand on-ground activities. This provides them with practical exposure and helps them better understand the field of biodiversity conservation.

Partnership with Government and UNDP

The program is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the NBA and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Its aim is to build a strong pool of trained young professionals who can contribute to environmental conservation at the grassroots level.

Launched in 2019-20

The BSIP program was first launched in 2019-20 on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22, 2020). Since then, every year, selected interns are deployed across different states and union territories to understand region-specific environmental challenges.

Significant Investment in Internship Programs

The NBA is investing approximately ₹1 crore in supporting these internship programs. The goal is to develop a strong group of future biodiversity experts and ambassadors who can play a crucial role in conservation efforts.
