The two institutions have signed an MoU to advance next-generation mobility technologies and develop skilled talent for the automotive sector.

The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), a unit of the National Automotive Board (NAB) under the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar to collaborate on the development of electric vehicle (EV) and hydrogen-based automotive technologies.

According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the partnership aims to promote research in next-generation mobility technologies, strengthen industry-academia collaboration, and develop flexible learning programmes to build a skilled workforce for the automotive sector.

The MoU was signed by Saurabh Dalela, Director, ICAT, and Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.

Under the agreement, ICAT and IIT Ropar will jointly undertake applied research, technology development, and academic initiatives in key areas such as electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered mobility solutions, and future automotive technologies. The collaboration is expected to support indigenous technology development while accelerating innovation across India's automotive ecosystem.

ICAT, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, provides automotive testing, certification, homologation, research and development (R&D), and engineering services. The organisation stated that partnerships with leading academic institutions are a key part of its strategy to strengthen India's capabilities in future mobility technologies and enhance its global competitiveness in the automotive sector.
