The company will begin pilot production in August and series production in September, with plans to expand into motors for electric cars, three-wheelers, trucks, and buses.

L&T EPS Mobility, the automotive arm of Larsen & Toubro's (L&T) Electronic Products and Systems (EPS) division, has secured its first commercial order. The company has won a contract to supply 500,000 electric vehicle traction motors to an electric two-wheeler manufacturer over the next three years. The name of the customer has not been disclosed.

Prashant Chiranjive Jain, Managing Director of L&T Vyoma and Head of L&T's Electronic Products and Systems division, said the order has already been booked. Pilot production of the traction motors will begin at the company's Coimbatore facility in August, followed by series production in September.

Under the contract, L&T will supply approximately 167,000 traction motors annually. The company also plans to expand beyond the electric two-wheeler segment by developing traction motors ranging from 8 kW to 200 kW and 48V to 800V for three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, trucks, and electric buses.

L&T believes there is a significant opportunity for an indigenous, technology-driven Tier-1 supplier in India's EV ecosystem. Sudeepth Puthumana, Head of Mobility Business at L&T Electronic Products and Systems, said the company aims to provide advanced, locally developed traction motor solutions for both Indian and global customers.

To strengthen its technology portfolio, L&T recently licensed motor technology from Israel-based EVR Motors. The design uses a trapezoidal stator, which improves torque density while reducing the amount of magnet material required. According to the company, 98% of the motor's components and around 70% of its value are locally sourced.

The company 40-acre Coimbatore manufacturing campus is currently being expanded, with the second phase expected to be completed within the next 10 months. L&T aims to achieve full production capacity by March 2027. The company has also approved an investment of Rs 5,000 crore over the next five years for its electronics division, a move expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs while supporting growth in India EV and industrial electronics sectors.
