The institute’s Director, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, said that since the last date to submit the application was March 31, the institute has initiated the formal process in time. The proposal is now awaiting responses from the concerned ministries.
The institute has applied to introduce a Doctor of Medicine (MD) postgraduate course. If approved by the central government, IIT Kharagpur will become the first IIT in the country to offer a PG medical programme.
According to the proposal, the programme will begin with 20 seats. The institute has already appointed 20 qualified doctors who will teach and train the students.
Prof. Chakraborty mentioned that the proposal has received support from the Ministry of Education, but the final decision will be taken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as it is an inter-ministerial matter.
The proposal was first presented before the institute’s governing board on September 23, 2025, for approval. However, no definite timeline has been set yet, as it depends entirely on the NMC’s approval.
For practical training, students will gain hands-on experience at Dr. B.C. Roy Multi-Speciality Medical Research Centre and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Super Speciality Hospital. Admissions will be conducted through NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test).
Additionally, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital is being expanded into a 220-bed modern facility. This will not only provide better training for students but also improve healthcare services for students, staff and the surrounding community.
This initiative is considered a major step toward establishing IIT Kharagpur as a strong center not only for engineering but also for medical education and research.
