Ingka Group, the largest operator of IKEA stores globally, is set to significantly strengthen its presence in India over the next five years. The Netherlands-based franchise operator plans to launch 25 small- and medium-format stores across the country.
At the same time, the company is moving ahead with the development of large-format outlets on the outskirts of New Delhi as part of IKEA-owned shopping centre projects. Gurugram is expected to be the first to open, followed by Noida.
The announcement comes as IKEA inaugurated its sixth store in India in Pune, adding to its existing presence in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and New Delhi.
Ingka Group (Ikea) global commercial manager Javier Quiñones said: “India is one of our most important markets globally, and we are putting even greater focus on it as a place for growth. The Indian home furnishing market is expected to grow by 50% in value by 2030. We want to play a role in this, while also learning from India and other Asian markets where retail is developing rapidly and where we are still a young brand.”
Ikea India CEO Patrik Antoni said: “We feel we have built a solid understanding of our customers across different parts of the country to take a bolder leap in the coming period. We can inspire more people to make the most of their living situations – offering ideas and solutions that may be new to many people in India. Expanding our network and becoming more accessible is key to that.”
Ingka Group has invested over €900 million ($1.03 billion) in India to date, underscoring its long-term commitment to the market.
In addition to expanding its physical footprint, IKEA is also enhancing its digital reach, extending online delivery services to new regions. Most recently, the service was rolled out across Tamil Nadu, making it accessible to an estimated 10 million potential customers in the state.
These developments are part of Ingka Group’s broader €5 billion investment plan over three years, aimed at driving retail growth through new store openings and upgrades across the majority of its 32 markets.
