Google and UNICEF Partner to Boost AI-Based Education Across Four Countries
Google, Google.org, Google for Education and UNICEF have announced a new three-year partnership to strengthen the education sector in India, Brazil, Pakistan and Kenya.

The initiative aims to provide modern and digital education to millions of students. Funded by Google.org, the program will focus on teacher training, the use of AI tools, literacy, numeracy and improving access to digital learning.

Under this program, AI-based education tools such as Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini for Education and ReadAlong will be used. Through these technologies, the partners aim to provide students with a better learning experience and connect teachers with modern teaching methods. Google believes that AI technology can make education more effective and personalized.

Focus on Modernizing the Education System

The partnership was announced on May 19, 2026, through an official Google blog post. The information was shared by Google’s Chief Technologist for Learning and Sustainability, Benedict Gomes and Google.org’s Vice President and Global Head, Maggie Johnson. Over the next three years, UNICEF will work closely with local governments, education experts and communities across all four countries.

As part of this initiative, Google will provide technical support, access to AI tools, product workshops and training programs. UNICEF staff, government officials and people associated with the education sector will benefit from these resources. The initiative will especially target areas where access to digital education resources and technical training remains limited.

Teachers will receive training on how to use AI tools such as Gemini and NotebookLM so they can better tailor lessons according to students’ needs. Meanwhile, the ReadAlong app will be used to strengthen children’s reading abilities and comprehension skills. The main objective of this initiative is to improve foundational education skills such as reading, writing and mathematics.

AI Tools to Improve Learning

Pia Rebello Britto, UNICEF’s Global Director of Education, said that with the support of organizations like Google for Education and Google.org, UNICEF is working to provide children with education and skills suited for the 21st century. She said that by responsibly using AI and new technologies, children can be provided with a better future. In this context, Google stated that digital tools and modern technology will be used to deliver quality education to students so they can be prepared for future challenges.

The main objective of this initiative by Google and UNICEF is to promote critical thinking, problem-solving and digital skills among students. The program will focus on providing secure digital education access to both in-school and out-of-school youth. UNICEF also stated that annual impact reports will be released during the partnership. Through these reports, the effectiveness of the education solutions implemented in Brazil, India, Pakistan and Kenya will be evaluated.

Annual Impact Reports to Be Released

This partnership aligns with UNICEF’s Digital Education Strategy, which aims to develop digital education solutions while keeping children’s rights, teachers’ needs and the real conditions of local communities in mind.

In the next phase, UNICEF will work together with local communities, governments and education experts across the four countries to further expand the project. It is believed that this AI-based initiative could bring major transformation to the education sector in the coming years and connect millions of students with modern digital learning.
