Launch of Centre for Southeast Asian Studies at Nalanda University
The Centre for Southeast Asian Studies was inaugurated at Nalanda University on Tuesday. This initiative is considered a significant step towards strengthening academic and strategic cooperation between India & the countries of Southeast Asia.

The Centre was inaugurated by P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The event was attended by ambassadors, high commissioners, representatives from partner countries, vice chancellors and faculty members, highlighting the international importance of this initiative.

A Major Step Towards Strengthening India-ASEAN Relations

This initiative follows the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ASEAN-India Summit 2025 held in Kuala Lumpur in October 2025. Its objective is to further enhance cooperation between India and ASEAN countries.

Work Across 10 Research Areas

The Centre will focus on 10 interdisciplinary research areas, including climate change, maritime studies, trade, cultural heritage, public health, migration, digital cooperation and international relations. It aims to function as a knowledge partner under the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Plan of Action 2026-2030.

A Hub For Policy & Knowledge Development

The Centre is designed to serve as a ‘knowledge partner’ under the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Plan (2026-2030). It will not only promote academic research but also play a key role in policy-making. Additionally, it will act as a major platform for students, researchers and policy experts.

A Strong Bridge Between India & Southeast Asia

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Centre will act as a bridge between India and Southeast Asia. It will strengthen academic research, support policy collaboration and deepen cultural exchanges and historical ties between the regions.

New Opportunities & Global Exposure For Students

With the launch of this Centre, students will gain better opportunities for international education and research. Collaborations with foreign universities, exchange programmes and internships will be developed, providing students with global exposure and a deeper understanding of international issues, which will benefit their careers and research.

Moreover, this initiative will strengthen India’s 'Act East Policy' and help Nalanda University further establish itself as a global centre of education.
